Canada Research Chair in Integrated Microfluidics and Nanofluidics

Dr. David Sinton has been named the Canada Research Chair in Integrated Microfluidics and Nanofluidics.  He studies fluid flow in plumbing the width of a hair — and a thousand times smaller than that at the nanoscale.  The research has biomedical and energy applications.

Student EcoCAR team is going for gold
A team of UVic engineering students “is going for gold this year” after placing second overall in the first year of a three-year EcoCAR competition among 17 North American universities to design and build an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), and will now be putting theory into practice on their recently delivered 2009 Saturn Vue hybrid.

Dr. Sadik Dost receives Craigdarroch Gold Medal for Career Achievement in Research
Dr. Sadik Dost has been named as the recipient of the Craigdarroch Gold Medal for Career Achievement in Research.  From watches and cell phones to supercomputers and solar panels, almost all electronic devices rely on the semiconducting properties of single crystal materials.  Sadik Dost is an international leader in crystal growth, the processes used to produce these materials.

Dr. J. Pan wins IEICE best paper award
Dr. Jingping Pan, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, was recently awarded the IEICE best paper award, along with his co-writers, for a paper published in the 2007 IEICE Transactions on Communications (english edition).

Professor W.J.R. Hoefer receives the 2009 IEEE Canada A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal
Wolfgang. J.R. Hoefer, a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was awarded the 2009 IEEE Canada A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal for pioneering research in microwave engineering, computational electromagnetics, and working with industry to develop practical time domain simulators.

Dr. Afzal Suleman appointed Associate Vice-President Research
Dr. Afzal Suleman will assume the office of Associate Vice-President Research effective 1 July 2009 for a five-year term.  Dr. Suleman is currently the Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Engineering.

Dr. Thomas Darcie elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America
Professor Thomas Darcie continues to lead internationally in optical systems research, building upon his 20 years at AT&T Bell Labs (including Dept Head, Lab Director, VP).  He was elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America in October, 2008.
