Examines how ethnicity, class and gender shaped the sixteenth-and seventeenth-century accounts of the Spanish conquests in the Americas. Authors studied include Cortés, Alva Ixtlilxóchitl, Sahagún, Poma de Ayala, the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
