A study of major achievements in British fiction during the high Victorian period; focus on works by Charles Dickens and George Eliot; other authors might include the Bröntes, Thackeray, Trollope, Collins, Gaskell; issues may include industrialization, the changing roles of women, the impact of history; also realism, serial fiction, the circulating library, illustration, gender and writing.
