Description

Investigates changing character and extent of murder in England from 18th century to the present. Critically examines explanations of historians, sociologists and anthropologists for falling homicide rates over the long term. Specific subjects include: capital punishment for murder; rise of sensationalist fiction and journalism; growing role of police investigation; public responses to particular, infamous murders; emergence of serial killer as pop culture phenomenon.
